My experience using blogs

My experience using blogs in my English class has been generally good. Overall, I can say that I have learned to use a blog in a much more effective way, and this can help me in the future in my journalism career.
In terms of improvement concerning my writing skills, I find that I have slightly improved. However, even though regularly writing and practicing helps improve your skills, I think that I generally tend to use the same words and sentences, to be sure not to make any mistakes. My self-critique would be to try and be more adventurous and to dare to use new words and phrases.
If I wanted to contribute to improving this activity, I think it would have maybe been interesting to write in the same format as we have been taught in our journalism/cinema classes (a news article or a script for example), which could be interesting since it would link our English class and the rest of our University classes.

In the future, I think that even though learning to write is important, there should be more of a focus on learning to speak. In my experience, my English has improved much more by speaking and listening. Even though one should know how to write correctly, the hardest part is speaking, and that is where the main focus in class should be.

The strike

The strike at the University is about the educational reform that the government wishes to launch. This reform addresses different issues, such as financing, quality, inclusion, etc. Also, the student’s demands are discussed, since the students are asking the government to tackle other issues.
The dedication to the strike is not really very strong. Even though the support for the student’s demands is transversal, there are many factors that influence the participation of the students in this protest, for example, students who come from other cities use this time to go back home, some students get part-time jobs, or those who have children stay home to take care of them, etc.

Personally, I don’t think that I have learned anything new from the strikes this year, because since 2006 I have been part of many student protests, in high school and in university, I have participated in many assemblies, so I feel like every time it is just a repetition of what I have already seen. Despite all of this, I think that what my schoolmates are proposing is totally valid and I support them completely, even though this time I haven’t been very active.

Audiovisual Language!

My favorite class this semester is called Audiovisual Language. In this class we are taught to use audiovisual equipment (cameras, microphones, etc.) so that we may be able to produce our own films/shows with this equipment.
In terms of the camera, we learn about the different shots that exist, as well as the angles and movements that one can use. In terms of sound, we learn about the different types of microphones that exist and about the best way to get the sound that one is looking for. Once we learn the essentials about this equipment, we learn about the different programs that can be used in the postproduction of a movie or show, about editing and synchronizing the material.

I like this class because it is dynamic, it is a class where we learn many different things and it is hands-on. Also, knowing how to use this equipment is a very important tool for a career in communications in the modern day. Lastly, these classes are also useful outside of the University if one has personal projects.

Goal.com !

One of the many websites that I regularly check out is Goal.com, which is dedicated to news regarding football all around the world. This site has platforms in nearly 30 countries, but I like to check out the Spanish platform, since I find it to be the most complete one. The news is divided into different sections: scores, interviews, transfers, etc.

I surf this website daily, and this helps me keep up to date on what is going on in the world of football. Likewise, Goal interviews many good players, and also has a points system where they rate each player for his playing in each game. This allows them to create a statistical database which is then used by the videogame FIFA, which is the most popular amongst football lovers. All of the above gives this website and its collaborators great recognition.

Lasagne!

One of the many meals that I like to cook is vegetarian lasagna, which is also one of my favorite meals to eat as well. I make it relatively often, whenever I have the opportunity to cook for someone that I appreciate.

It is prepared in the following way: one must chop onions, peppers, garlic, mushrooms, one carrot and one zucchini, and then fry them in a pan. Then you add salt, oregano, black pepper and cumin according to taste. Once they are ready, you add tomato sauce and mix it all together. Once this part is ready, then you start to prepare the béchamel sauce. You put 50g of melted butter with 50g of flour, and mix them in a pot. Little by little you start adding half a liter of milk, always mixing until the sauce starts to get thicker. When it is ready, you start to put together the lasagna, alternating in the following manner: one layer of pasta, then the vegetable sauce, pasta, béchamel sauce, cheese, and then pasta. Repeat once, and then put the lasagna in the oven for 20 minutes. Enjoy!

Madrid!

This photograph was taken by my uncle Gerardo on September 13th 2015, close to the Vincente Calderon stadium in Madrid, Spain. It is a photograph of myself and my cousin Pedro among a large group of supporters of the team Atlético de Madrid.

I like this photograph a lot because it summarizes two great experiences that I had last year. On one hand I was able to see a football match between Atlético and Barcelona, and I got to see Messi and other players like him live and this was a spectacular experience. On the other hand, I got the chance to get to know a part of my family, my uncle and my cousins, since they live in Madrid and this was my first trip to this city. I had a great time during this trip, and we shared many nice moments with them, and we created a link that was inexistent because of the great distance between us. A few months later I went to visit them again, and I hope to go back as soon as possible.

My headphones!

My Skull Candy headphones are my favorite tech item. I bought them in 2013 when I was in Australia and I still use them every day.

I use them very often because I like to listen to music while I’m taking the subway or the bus, as well as when I’m cooking or hanging out with my friends.

I really like these headphones because they produce a good quality sound, making the music I love sound great. Furthermore, the design of the headphones is green, yellow and red, which are the colors that represent reggae music, which I like a lot.

My life without these headphones would be more or less the same. I don’t think that a tech item should be able to change your life so much that you cannot live without it, that would be very sad.

Journalism!

I chose to study journalism because I have always liked to keep myself up to date on current events in Chile and around the world. Ever since I was a child I have read the newspaper and history books, and this helped me contextualize these different events. My dream job would be to write about travelling, which would unite these two things that I am passionate about.

Before starting university I had also considered studying public administration, but in the end I chose journalism because it is much more open, and there are more possibilities to grow professionally and personally.

My university experience has been good for now, I have met many amazing people, I have become good friends with some of them, and I have learned many different things that help me be critical and see things from a different perspective.

Luna and Manchas

In my life I had a lots of pets: cats, dogs, hamsters and a guinea pig. Now, a just have two cats, Luna and Manchas. I got Luna as a gift for my birthday in 2010, and I adopt Manchas in 2012 because she follow me to my home.

Luna has a gray fur, thin and not so much lovely. She is an independent cat who no take care about his owner. She got cancer 3 years ago but she got recovery and now is very healthy.

Manchas has a black fur with orange spots, she is a lovely and fatty cat who love sleep and eat a lot.

They are very important for me because I past some years in my life without pets, and when I got them I was very happy. For me, the purr of a cat is one of the happiest thing of the life.
